A Japanese-Italian fusion dessert, Matcha Affogato is effortless and unforgettable. The perfect combination of intense matcha green tea with a creamy subtle vanilla ice cream is a perfect dessert at all times.
The Italian coffee-based dessert, Affogato, is made by drowning the vanilla ice cream or gelato in a shot of hot espresso. The hot coffee melts some parts of the ice cream right away, forming a thick coffee cream layer on the side.
Using matcha instead of espresso creates a bittersweet treat, the dessert can be whipped in seconds. It is basically poured matcha over vanilla ice cream. The trick is to make sure that the matcha is properly whisked so it leaves no crump, giving you a silky and smooth taste.
Vanilla ice cream is a PERFECT mixture for matcha Affogato. Although if you feel a little adventurous, you can try using other non-fruit-based ice creams. It might go well with some subtle ice cream flavors such as coconut, pistachio, almond, and macadamia. In this recipe, I use Vanilla flavor ice cream from Oatly which is dairy-free and very creamy.
